Monita Scorum type silver sceatta
The coin featured here has been out of a ground for only a few days. It was found by Ian Darke, who forwarded a set of images to me.
The coin is an Anglo-Saxon silver sceatta, which was identified by Ian as being an example of the Monita Scorum type (number 824 in the Standard Catalogue).
On the obverse is a diademed bust facing right, surrounded by a legend reading MONITA SCORVM. On the reverse is a quilled crescent with four bars within the curve. There is a beaded outer border with the point of a chevron attached to each bead.
This type of sceatta is very rare and much sought after by collectors. The obverse on this example has been struck off centre and is weak in places but is otherwise in about VF condition. The reverse would grade VF.
Valuation
If the coin was offered for sale at auction then in its present state of preservation a likely pre-sale estimate would be £700 to £1,000.
