Gold stater of the Regini and Atrebates

This coin was unearthed by a detectorist named Chris, who wanted a valuation on his find. Chris has a 50/50 agreement with a landowner, so a figure was needed for the split.

The coin is an Ancient British gold stater of the Regini and Atrebates. On the obverse is a wreath design containing hidden faces. On the reverse is a horse facing right with a wheel below, a letter E over the rump and COMMIOS partly below and partly in front on the edge. Only the top of some of the letters show up, the lowers sections are all off the flan, which is usual for this type.

In Ancient British Coins this stater is listed as the Commios E-type and is said to be extremely rare. In 2020 the number known was 23 so this coin could be number 24.

Valuation

The reverse is sharp and would grade good VF. The obverse is not as sharp and I’d grade this side as nearly VF. Being one of only a couple of dozen known specimens, I’d suggest that a likely pre-sale auction estimate on this coin would be £1,000 to £1,200.
