Long cross type penny of Aethelred II

This Anglo-Saxon penny was found by Shaun Murton. It has been reported to and recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme.

The coin is a long cross type penny of Aethelred II. On the reverse the legend reads +GODPINE M-O GLEA so the moneyer is Godwine and the mint Gloucester.  The mint isn’t particularly rare but neither is it as common as several others of the same period.

Valuation

Shaun’s find would grade about VF and to a collector of Anglo-Saxon pennies it should be worth around £250.
