Long cross penny of Henry III

When this coin surfaced Anthony Hopkinson knew it was a broken voided long cross penny of Henry III. However, Anthony likes to gain as much information as possible about his finds so he asked if I could add anything to what he already knew.

Firstly, this penny is voided long cross coin of class 3a2. When I first looked at the images of the coin I didn’t hold out much hope about identifying the mint and moneyer, as only ER (ligate) followed by what initially looked like IERO could be seen. Fortunately, after doing some research everything fell into place.

If the whole of the legend had survived then it would read (missing letters in brackets) IERE  [MIE ONE V]ER. Therefore, the moneyer is Ieremie (full name Jeremy Louth of Bedegate) and the mint is York. In the truly massive Brussels’ hoard, which was discovered in 1908, there were only seven York mint coins bearing the name of this moneyer.

It’s a great pity that much of the coin has been lost, for what is left of it is in quite good condition.
