John, penny

This  hammered silver coin was recently unearthed by John Garner. It’s a voided short cross penny, which isn’t in very good condition.

On the reverse I can make out +ABEL ON but the mint signature doesn’t show up. However, a moneyer named Abel was an official at only one mint: London, so that is where this penny will have been struck. The obverse is weak but from the style of the lettering (very tall) I can say this penny must belong to class 6b, which was struck close to the end of the reign of King John.

Valuation

John’s coin is only in Fair condition and isn’t particularly scarce, so my price range would be no higher than £15 – £20.
