Irish penny of Henry III

The images of this hammered silver coin came in from Steve Bartlett, who asked for a valuation to pass on to the owner of the land on which this find turned up.

On the obverse, situated within a single triangle, is a head wearing a simplistic crown; the shoulders are wide and open. To the right is a cinquefoil, to the left a hand holding a sceptre and the legend on this side reads HENRICVS REX. On the reverse is a voided long cross, which divides up a legend reading DAV ION DEV ELI’ so Davi is the moneyer and Dublin the mint.

The preceding information adds up to this coin being a type IId Irish penny of Henry III. In Coins of Scotland, Ireland and the Islands it is listed as number 6243.

Valuation

Steve’s find has the obverse struck off centre but the coin is otherwise in about VF condition. Most Irish pennies of Henry III are not particularly scarce but this specimen has a rare type and moneyer combination. I traced a few type IId pennies but all had the name of Ricard as the moneyer on the reverse whereas Steve’s coin has Davi.

After taking into consideration the state of preservation and the rarity of this coin I would set a pre-sale auction estimate at £200-250.
