Irish halfpenny of Edward I

The finder of this coin wished to remain anonymous. He asked for my opinion on his find, further details and a grade of preservation.

This is an Irish halfpenny of Edward I. The mint signature on the reverse, CIVI TAS VATE RFOR, points towards it being struck at the mint situated in Waterford. It is an example of class Ib and is listed in Coins of Scotland, Ireland and the Islands as number 6254. Lord Stewartby discusses Irish halfpence of this type on page 182 in English Coins 1180-1551
