Irish halfpenny of Edward I

A few weeks back I said I didn’t see many Irish hammered halfpennies as detecting finds. Having recently unearthed one, Colin Pearson thought I might be interested in the coin pictured here.

Colin’s find is an Irish halfpenny of Edward I. The legend on the reverse reads CIVI TAS WATE RFOR, so the mint is Waterford. The letter C and E are open, so this halfpenny is an example of class Ia.

Valuation

The coin is weak in places but good enough to grade near Fine, so to a collector it should be worth ÂŁ50 – ÂŁ60.
