Hansons sell reader’s denarius of Carausius for £6,000

A very important coin from one of our readers was sold by Hanson in their Historica Auction on 9 and 10 December 2021. The coin was found by Lee Richardson in August of this year.

I first saw it when it was recorded at the PAS and it was my Featured Find in that week’s review: PAS Finds: week ended 27 August 2021

Lee saw that article and kindly sent the coin into the website and I made it Find of the Week and wrote a detailed article on it: Denarius of Carausius

It was Lot 203 in Hansons auction. The auctioneer gave an estimate of £5,000 – £7,000. In my article I suggested a pre-sale estimate of £6,000 – £8,000. I did add “On a good day it might break through the upper estimate, on a bad day it wouldn’t.“. The coin sold for £6,000.

I have a review of the whole auction at Hansons Historica Auction – 9/10 December 2021; it includes some other notable detecting finds.
