Halfpenny of Elizabeth I

Rob Warwick said this is the smallest hammered silver coin he has ever found. I was asked to identify the monarch and mint and provide a valuation.

Rob’s find is a halfpenny of Elizabeth I, which will have been struck at the mint within the Tower of London. On the obverse is a portcullis with the mint mark above and on the reverse a cross with three pellets in each angle. Unfortunately, the mint mark is blurred and I found it impossible to identify.

Silver halfpennies of Elizabeth I used to be rare but the improvement in the performance in detecting machines has led to far more small coins being unearthed. Therefore, many coins that used to be rare now turn up on the market quite regularly.

Valuation

The coin would grade about VF but with doubt about the mint mark my highest price range would be £50-60.
