Halfpenny of Edward I

This hammered silver coin came in from Steve Simmons with a request for a valuation. It’s a very recent find, discovered in long pasture somewhere in Wiltshire.

Steve’s find is a coin of Edward I and at 15mm in diameter it is a halfpenny. On the obverse the drapery on King Edward’s chest is made up of a curved line with wedges above so this is an example of class 3b. On the reverse the legend reads CIVI TAS LON DON so the coin was struck at London.

Class 3b is the earliest round halfpenny of Edward I and it is also one of the scarcest for the reign. The hammerman has taken care in the striking, for the coin is round and quite attractive.

Valuation

The only minor defect is a very small edge chip but the coin is otherwise in VF condition. To a specialist collector this rare halfpenny should be worth £120-150.
