Gold quarter stater

This is Rob Warwick’s second find to come in this week. Rob said it was found a while back and he wondered what it might be worth today.

The coin is a rather special gold quarter stater. On the obverse there are two figures in a boat, which is a feature that can be seen on a number of quarter staters. The symbols on the reverse are divided up by a zig-zag bar.

An example of the same coin was sold at auction by Spink late in 2015. It was lot 10 in the Geoff Cottam collection and was described as being an extremely rare example of Sills’ Cf Insular coinage. Sills was quoted as saying that this type was “. . . probably the earliest regular British gold coinage”. Therefore, Rob’s find is rather important.

Valuation

The coin might have been struck from worn dies and it would grade no higher than Fine. However, as it is a significant rarity a pre-sale auction estimate shouldn’t be any lower than £280-350.
