Halfgroat of Henry VIII
Shane Campbell described this coin as a ‘Henry Vii’ halfgroat and asked for a full ID and a valuation. The initial mark does not show up well but enough detail is visible for a full ID.
Shane’s find is a halfgroat but it is a coin of Henry VIII rather than Henry VII. It was struck at Canterbury during the second coinage. Flanking the shield on the reverse are two letters: W A, which stand for William and Archbishop. Therefore, this halfgroat was struck for the profit of William Warham when he was Archbishop of Canterbury.
Valuation
The coin would grade VF and has a particularly good image of the king on the obverse but there is a scratch on the reverse. There is some earth still holding on to parts of the detail but this could easily be removed by soaking the coin in warm water and Fairy Liquid for a few minutes. It’s not a rare coin but has always been popular with collectors so my estimate on this example would be £200-250.
