Sceat of Eadberht of Northumbria

Dave Waller said the coin featured here was unearthed in North Yorkshire last month. It has already been identified as a class A silver sceat of Eadberht of Northumbria.

The obverse of this coin is weak and would grade about Fine. The weakness will be due to the obverse die being worn rather than through circulation wear. The reverse is better and would grade VF but it has been struck off centre.

Valuation

Go back 40 years and this type of sceat would be worth more in cash terms than it is today. They used to be very rare but over the years a high number of examples have been found by detectorists. The increased supply has led to a decrease in prices.

In its present condition this Eadberht sceat should still be worth around £200 to a collector.
