Gold sovereign of George IV

This coin was unearthed last Sunday by Carol Jones. It’s a gold sovereign of George IV and is dated 1822 on the reverse.

Apart from a few very slight marks to the edge and fields the coin is in remarkable condition for a detecting find. Indeed, I’ve seen a number of George IV sovereigns that have come out of the ground but this specimen is undoubtedly the best.

I was told that the surfaces are matt rather than bright gold in colour. This is a slightly negative point as collectors prefer surfaces that are bright rather than matt.

Valuation

The coin looks to be perfectly genuine but forgeries of this date are known so it would need to have a thorough check-up in order to ensure everything is in order. If it passes muster then a likely pre-sale auction estimate would be £3,000-4,000.
