Groat of Mary Tudor

This is another hammered silver coin from the group that came in from Mark Drewitt.

Mark’s coin is a groat of Mary Tudor. As I’ve said before, a huge number of groat were struck during the reign of Mary and they turn up regularly as detecting finds. I’ve also said that most of the latter are not in good condition.

Valuation

The groat pictured here is in well above average condition. Both sides would grade VF but the coin has a couple of significant defects. There is what looks like a curved graze in front of Mary’s chin and the flan appears to be uneven. Without the defects this could have been a groat worth £500 but with the defects its market value would be nearer £250.
