Groat of Mary I
A detectorist signing himself as ‘Digger Dan’ said he unearthed this coin from Derbyshire soil on the 17th of August. He wanted to know more about his find and said this site was highly recommended by a friend. It’s really nice to hear that the work we do it appreciated.
Dan’s find is a groat of Mary I. A huge number of groats were struck during Mary’s short reign and examples turn up regularly as detecting finds. The majority are worn and/or damaged through long circulation.
Valuation
The groat found by Dan cannot have circulated for long as most of the detail is reasonably clear and overall it would grade about VF for the issue. Sadly, it has a significant defect in the shape of a noticeable scratch from about 4 to 8 o’clock on the obverse. The scratch will have a real impact on its possible commercial value. Without it I’d have said a good deal more but with the scratch my highest valuation range would be £80-100.
