Two Skilling piece of Christian VII

A huge range of foreign coins turn up as detecting finds but I’ve never seen one like the specimen pictured here, which came in from Richard Storey with a request for a valuation.

On the obverse is a CR monogram with VII below. On the reverse, in seven lines, is 2 SKILLING DANSK SKILLE MYNT 1804 IGM. Therefore, the coin is a silver 2 skilling piece of Christian VII, who was born in 1749 and died in 1808. Christian VII was King of Denmark and Norway but was troubled by mental illness, which led to others being responsible for rule.

This coin is a type struck to circulate in Norway. Even though it is described as being silver it contained only 25% of that metal. Two skilling pieces of this type were struck from 1801 to 1808 and 1804 seems to be the scarcest date.

Valuation

This example would grade good Fine to about VF for the type and should be worth around £25 to a collector.
