Penny of Alexander III
This is another coin that came in from Michael Young. I was told that it came with the other two from a local antique dealer. Michael knew what it was but couldn’t work out the mint.
The coin is a penny of King Alexander III of Scotland. It was struck during Alexander’s first coinage, which commenced circa 1250 and lasted unto circa 1280. On the obverse is a profile image of the king and on the reverse a voided long cross with stars in the angles
Fortunately, most of the legend on the reverse is fairly clear. If the whole of it was visible then it would read hEN RI ONS STR, so Henri is the moneyer and Stirling is the mint. This isn’t one of the rarest mints but neither is it as common as Berwick, Perth and Roxburgh.
Valuation
The obverse would grade Fine and the reverse is a bit better. In its present condition my price range would be £150-180.
