Gold Stater – Vepo Triadic type of the Corieltavi
The detectorist who unearthed this coin asked to remain anonymous but wanted my opinion on the possible value of his find. It’s an Ancient British gold stater, which is 18mm in diameter and 5 grams in weight.
In the centre of the obverse is a line flanked by crescents and within the arc of each one is a circle decorated with pellets; the whole of this rests on the centre of a vertical wreath. On the reverse, facing left, is a horse with a body made up of crescents, which has three pellets under the tail, VEP above and CORF below.
This stater is a coin of the Corieltavi and it is listed in Ancient British Coins as the Vepo Triadic type. This is still a rare coin but it’s nothing like as rare as it was before detectorists started to dig up examples fairly regularly.
Valuation
A specimen in comparable condition was sold at auction last year for £1,000. However, the surfaces on this coin are not as attractive so my valuation figure would be £850-900.
