Gold Stater – North East Coast type of the Corieltavi
This is the second Ancient British gold stater that was found by Simon Leak’s late brother on the site of the Stixwould Rally. As with the first find, a valuation was needed.
The stater is another coin of the Corieltavi but this is a variety of the North East Coast type. On the obverse is the usual wreath, cloak and crescents but there are small pellets and dashes behind the crescents. On the reverse is a disjointed horse with a four-armed spiral under the chin, a star in front, a pelletal sun below and lines and pellets in the exergue.
This variety is not listed in Ancient British Coins. However, I traced an example listed as the Right Type with Sun, Spiral and Star, which was described as being extremely rare.
Valuation
Both sides are well struck and the distinguishing features are all clear. It’s an attractive coin, which I would grade as good VF. If I was cataloguing it for sale at auction then as it is a significant rarity I would set the pre-sale estimate at £700-900.
