Gold Stater – South Ferriby type of the Corieltavi
This is the first of two Ancient British gold staters that came in from Simon Leak. The coins came off the land where the Stixwould Rally (Lincolnshire) was held back in 2008. An indeterminate number of staters were unearthed during the rally – some were declared but others were not. Simon and his brother were friends of the landowner and secured the site from nighthawks after the rally. They searched the area thoroughly but only managed to find two more coins, which were reported to the landowner. Simon’s brother, who has passed away, located both coins and a valuation is now needed for his widow.
Coin number one is a variety of the South Ferriby type of the Corieltavi. On the obverse is a wreath, a cloak and crescents. On the reverse is a lunate horse facing left with an ‘anchor face’ above, a star below and another star under the horse’s head.
In Ancient British Coins this type of stater is listed as number 1743. However, the variety with a star below the horse’s head is very rare.
Valuation
This is an attractive and well struck gold stater with good eye appeal. I’d grade it as good VF and if I was cataloguing it for sale at auction I would set the pre-sale estimate at £650-750.
