Gold stater of the Regni and Atrebates

This coin was unearthed in Hampshire and the finder, Jon Tranter, asked for a full ID and a valuation.

Jon’s find is an Ancient British gold stater. On the obverse is a wreath design with two hidden faces. On the reverse is a horse facing right, with a wheel below and a symbol like a letter E above. Partly in front and partly below the horse is COMMIOS but hardly any of it shows up.

In Ancient British Coins this type of stater is listed under the Regni and Atrebates as the Commios E-Type and listed as number 1025. In ABC the type is said to be extremely rare. In the Standard Catalogue it is number 66.

Valuation

This gold stater is well struck and would grade good VF with eye appeal. If it was offered for sale at auction then the pre-sale estimate shouldn’t be any lower than £1,500.
