Denarius of Vespasian

This is the first from a small group of Roman coins sent in by Robin Dones to be identified and valued. Robin said they were the end result of a week of detecting in Northamptonshire.

The coin is a denarius of Vespasian (AD 69-79), who secured peace after the civil wars of AD 68-69. On the obverse is a laureate head of the emperor and a legend reading IMP CAES VESP AVG P M. On the reverse are emblems of the augurate and pontificate with AVGVR above and TRI POT below.

In volume I of David Sear’s Roman Coins and Their Values the obverse die is number 2281 and the reverse is 2282. This die paring is quite rare. The first is dated to AD 70-71 and the second to AD 72-73.

Valuation

The flan is a bit discoloured but the coin is otherwise in better than Fine condition. Pricewise, with the rare die combination I’d say £60.
