Gold stater of the Belgae
Mike Ruczynski sent in the images of this coin about three hours after it was unearthed by his brother, John. I was told it came off a field full of flints and some “were the size of melons.”
John’s find is an Ancient British gold stater, which is an early uninscribed issue of the Belgae. On the obverse is a wreath, cloak and crescents. Facing left on the reverse is a disjointed horse with a rectangular head, a body made up of crescents, four vertical legs, many pellets above and a crab-like creature below.
In Ancient British Coins staters like this one are listed as the Chute type (number 746) and re said to be very common. In the Standard Catalogue they fall under Early Uninscribed Coinage as number 22.
Valuation
John’s find would grade near VF and if I was cataloguing it for sale at auction I’d set the pre-sale estimate at £350 to £400.
