Centenionalis of Constantine II
This 18mm in diameter Roman coin was sent in by Colin Barton, who requested a full ID on his find.
The coin is a billon centenionalis of Constantine II as Caesar under Constantine I. On the obverse is a laureate had of Constantine II and a legend that reads CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C. On the reverse are two soldiers facing each other, each holding a shield and a spear. Between the soldiers are two standards and below, in the exergue, are the mint letters for Lugdunum (SLG). The legend on this side reads GLORIA EXERCITVS.
Many different varieties and mints are known for this type of centenionalis. In volume V of David Sear’s Roman Coins and Their Values this example is listed as number 17316 and dated to AD 330.
The type is fairly common and I’ve seen several as detecting finds. This one would grade near VF so it is in above average condition for a Roman coin that has come out of the ground.
