Bronze unit of the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes

The coin featured here is from a group of finds sent in by Stephen Palmer. It’s a rather nice Ancient British bronze unit, which is an example of a coin of the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes.

On the obverse is a winged head facing left with CVNO in front and BELIN behind. On the reverse is a seated metal worker with TASCIO behind. The lettering on the obverse is a version of Cunonbelinus and on the reverse is an abbreviated form of Tasciovanos.

In the Standard Catalogue this type of bronze unit is listed as number 342. In Ancient British Coins it is the Cunobelinus Metalworker type (number 2969) and is said to be very common, which is surprising. Over the years I’ve seen a very wide range of Ancient British coins but this is the first example of this type of bronze unit that I have seen as a detecting find.

Valuation

The reverse has been struck well off centre but the coin is otherwise at least VF. In its present condition I’d set the minimum price range at £250 to £280.
