George III half guinea

Roger Paul said the find pictured here is his first Georgian gold coin for quite a while. Many of us are still waiting for a gold coin of any description to turn up.

Roger’s find is a George III half guinea of the spade type, so-called because of the shape of the shield on the reverse. The coin is dated 1795, which isn’t a scarce date but neither is it one of the most common.

Valuation

There are a few tiny nicks on the obverse and some scuffing behind the head of King George but this half guinea is otherwise in VF condition. Basing my estimate on coins in similar condition recently sold at auction, I would price this one at £400.
