Sixpence of Charles I
To be able to pass on details and a figure to a landowner, Steve Bartlett asked for a full ID and a valuation on this hammered silver coin.
Steve’s find is a sixpence of Charles I, which was struck at the mint in the Tower of London. The mint mark on both sides is a crown and this dates the coin to 1635-36. It’s an example of type 3a and is listed in the Standard Catalogue as number 2813.
Valuation
Sixpences of Charles I are not particularly scarce but having said that, examples don’t turn up very often as detecting finds. The obvers of this specimen would grade Fine, the reverse about Fine and in its present condition my price range would be £35-40.
