Farthing of Charles I

Glyn Peak asked for a valuation on this hammered copper coin, which measures only 16mm in diameter but is shown enlarged to highlight the detail. It’s a farthing of Charles I, examples of which rarely survive in good condition after being in the soil for close to 400 years.

Glyn’s find is an example of the Maltravers’ type. On the obverse is a crown on crossed sceptres and the legend on this side reads CAROLVS D G MAG BRIT. On the reverse is a crowned harp and a legend reading FRA ET HIB REX. There will be a mint mark on one or both sides but the crucial areas are not clear on the images I received.

Valuation

The obverse would grade good VF, the reverse about VF. It’s in well above average condition for a detecting find and to a keen collector it should be worth £30-40.
