Denarius of Augustus
Roger Paul said he had recently been enjoying a spell of good luck and featured here is another nice find: a denarius of Augustus.
On the obverse is a laureate head of the emperor and if the full legend was visible then it would read CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI F PATER PATRIAE. On the reverse Gaius and Lucius Caesars each hold a spear and a shield and the whole legend would read (starting in the exergue) Â C L CAESARES AVGVSTI F COS DESIG PRINC IVVENT.
In volume II of David Sear’s Roman Coins and Their Values denarii of this type are listed as number 1597. The type was struck at Rome from 2 BC to 4 AD. It must have been a very large issue for denarii like this one certainly aren’t scarce.
Valuation
The obverse would grade good Fine but only about half of the legend is on the flan. The reverse is flat on the high points and much of the legend can’t be seen but this side is otherwise Fine. Both sides have rather dark toning. It’s still a decent looking coin but in its present overall condition I would price it no higher than £100.
