Halfgroat of Edward III
Peter Vernon sent in the images of this coin on behalf of a detecting colleague. The coin had already been identified as a halfgroat of Edward III but there was a query about one of its characteristics.
This halfgroat has double annulet stops on the obverse and double saltire stops on the reverse. The general style, together with the omission of the French title on the obverse, points towards the coin being struck during the treaty period (1361-69) of Edward III.
On the obverse there are fleurs on all the cusps of the tressure except the one on the right of the king’s shoulder. Peter wondered if this would make the coin more appealing to a collector. Well, to a specialist in the reign of Edward III it might add interest but it would add little to its commercial value. Some treaty period halfgroats do not have a fleur on the king’s breast, so perhaps a die sinker added an unwanted fleur and tried to correct his error by leaving a blank space to the right.
Valuation
Part of both sides would grade about VF but the obverse and reverse legend both have flat areas. In its present condition my price range would be £80 to £90.
