Cut halfpenny of Henry I
This coin was sent in by Roger Paul but it was found by a detecting colleague, Ray Piercy. I was asked for my opinion on this find, which was thought to be a rare cut halfpenny of Henry I.
The obverse is in poor condition, which left it difficult to interpret the imagery. The reverse is in better condition and from the detail that stands out I was able to say this is definitely a type 6 (pointing bust and stars) cut halfpenny of Henry I. A few of the letters in the legend show up but most are indistinct and/or ambiguous. Unfortunately, I could identify neither the moneyer nor the mint.
Valuation
This is certainly one of the rarer types for Henry I but the state of preservation of this coin leaves much to be desired. As I’ve pointed out on several occasions, cut halfpennies sell for a great deal less than whole pennies. After taking into consideration the condition of this coin, which is a significant minus point, and its rarity (a plus point) my price range would be £80-120.
