Sixpence of Elizabeth I
The coin featured here came in from Steve Bartlett, who asked for my opinion on its possible value.
Steve’s find is a hammered coinage sixpence of Elizabeth I. It is dated 1593 above the shield on the reverse and the mint mark on both sides is a tun.Â
Valuation
Over the years detectorists have unearthed a huge number of sixpences of Elizabeth I. The majority have been in Poor to Fair condition and it is not unusual for them to be damaged in some way. There are a few exceptions and this is one of them. Steve’s coin is slightly short of flan but is otherwise about VF for the issue so it is in well above average condition for a detecting find. It should be worth around £150 to a general collector of hammered silver.
