Cut halfpenny of Henry I

This cut halfpenny is a very recent find, which was unearthed by Anthony Hopkinson.  Detectorists have found tens of thousands of cut coins dating from the voided short and long cross periods (Henry II to Henry III) but the specimen illustrated here is earlier.

Anthony’s find is a cut halfpenny of Henry I and is an example of class 15. On the obverse the lower part of the bust of King Henry is clear and overall this side would grade about Fine. The centre of the reverse shows up but the only part of the legend that can be seen is :ON, which is the copulative between the end of the moneyer’s name and the start of the mint signature, both of which are uncertain.

Cut halfpennies of Henry I are much rarer than whole pennies but (as I keep pointing out) they are worth far less in cash terms. It might not be worth much but very few detectorists have managed to locate a similar coin even after decades of searching.
