Cut halfpenny of Eadred I
This Anglo-Saxon cut halfpenny was unearthed very recently by Matt Nowy. I was asked to provide a full ID for the finder.
On the obverse all that shows up of the legend is DR.E.D. With these four letters it can only be a coin of Eadred, who was king from AD 946 to 955.
On the reverse, in two lines, is the name of the moneyer. However, all that remains on this cut halfpenny is ÐEO on the top line and A on the bottom line. The surviving letters match only one moneyer active during Eadred’s reogn: ÐEODMAER. The wedges on the upright of the letter D turn it into TH.
The mint is uncertain but we know at least that this cut halfpenny is an example of the two line type of Eadred and that a moneyer named Theodmaer was responsible for its issue.
The coin would grade Fine but some metal has been lost from the edge. The state of preservation could be better but this is the first cut halfpenny of Eadred I have seen as a detecting find and I doubt if I will ever see another.
