Halfcrown of Charles II
Mike Ruczynski sent in the images of this coin but it was found by his brother, John. It’s a milled coinage halfcrown of Charles II, examples of which rarely turn up as detecting finds.
The coin is dated 1673 on the reverse and in the legend the letter A in FRA has been struck over a misplaced letter R, so this is a rare variety. This side has a few scuffs and scratches but is otherwise in about VF condition.
There isn’t much circulation wear on the obverse but it is covered in scratches. Mike said the field it came off contains more flint than soil and this explains its overall condition.
Valuation
Sadly, after being tossed about in flint infested soil for close to 350 years the general appearance of this halfcrown isn’t good. The state of the obverse, in particular, would put off most collectors. If offered for sale at auction then in its present condition the pre-sale estimate would probably be set no higher than £80 to £100.
