Continental sterling of Guy de Dampierre
This finder of this hammered silver coin wished to remain anonymous. He said it was found in Lancashire and he thought it could be a Continental sterling.
The coin is a Continental sterling of the pollard type, so-called because of the hair-style of the head on the obverse. This sterling was struck for Guy de Dampierre, who was the Lord of Flanders from 1279 to 1305. On the obverse the legend reads +G MARCHIO NAMVR C. The reverse design is of the English type but the legend reads GCO MES FLA DRE. Sterlings of this type were struck at a mint situated in Namur.   Â
Valuation
This coin isn’t particularly scarce but its state of preservation is well above average for a detecting find. It is slightly short of flan but is otherwise in nearly VF condition so my price range would be £70-90.
