Edward I London farthing
Martin Depear unearthed this hammered silver coin on the 3rd of October. I was asked to provide a full ID and a valuation to pass on to a landowner.
The coin is an Edward I London farthing, which measured 12mm in diameter but is shown greatly enlarged. Prior to the time that detecting machines became capable of locating them, all hammered farthing were quite rare. However, the improvement in the sensitivity of metal detectors led to many farthings becoming fairly common.
Valuation
Martin’s find is an example of class 8. This class isn’t as rare as it used to be but neither is it as common as some of the earlier classes of Edward I. It’s a little weak in places but would still grade about VF so it should be worth up to £80 to a collector.
