Charles I shilling
This hammered silver coin was recently unearthed in Suffolk by Darren Clarke. Rather than being one of the usual low denominations this is a shilling.
This is a coin of Charles I, which was struck at the mint situated in the Tower of London. It’s an example of type 4.1 var., with mint mark triangle on both sides, with dates it to 1639-40.
Valuation
I’ve seen several shillings of Charles I as detecting finds but most have not been in good condition. This specimen is slightly double struck on CHRISTO on the reverse but is otherwise in about VF condition. Darren said it was buried deep in a pasture field so this might go some way to explain its above average condition.
If this Charles I shilling was offered for sale at auction then I would expect the pre-sale estimate to be around £150.
