Penny of Ecgberht of Wessex
Pictured here is a penny of Ecgberht of Wessex. The coin was found by a detectorist signing himself as Daniel and I was asked to provide a valuation.
There is a cross within the inner circle on the obverse and this is surrounded by a legend reading +E—EOhRT REX. The inner circle on the reverse is divided up in to three sections, in each of which is a curve (like a letter C) with a pellet in the opening. The legend on the reverse reads +EDELMOD MO—, the first part being the name of the moneyer.
I could not trace an exact match for this Ecgberht penny. There are several different types and varieties and this appears to be yet another for this Anglo-Saxon king.
Valuation
The coin would grade Fine but, sadly, it has a large piece missing from its edge; this defect would have a significant impact on its possible market value. If I was cataloguing it for sale at auction then in its present condition my highest pre-sale estimate would be £400-500.
