Canterbury halfgroat of Henry VII
Dave Smithy asked if I could let him have a full ID and a valuation on this hammered silver coin.
Dave’s find is a Canterbury halfgroat of Henry VII. The mint mark is a tun on the obverse but is unclear on the reverse. This halfgroat is a product of a joint issue by Henry VII and the Archbishop of Canterbury. A huge number of coins must have been struck, for examples of this type turn up regularly as detecting finds.
Valuation
The flan is a bit irregular but the coin is otherwise near VF for the type. Despite being one of the least scarce coins of Henry VII, it is in better condition than most others I have seen and to a collector it should be worth £70-80.
