Sovereign type penny of Henry VIII
The hammered silver coin featured here is a recent find, which came in from Anthony Hopkinson to be identified and valued.
The coin is a sovereign type penny of Henry VIII. It was struck at Durham during the second coinage. On the reverse there is a letter T to the left and a W to the right of the shield of arms. It has mint mark star on the obverse only.
The preceding information adds up to this coin being struck for the profit of Thomas Wolsey when he was Bishop of Durham. Wolsey had been Henry VIII’s ‘fixer’ since early in his reign. However, he eventually fell from grace and died on his way to London to face a number of serious charges. Thomas Cromwell, who had been Wolsey’s right hand man, would speedily become chief advisor to Henry VIII.
Valuation
The obverse has been struck off centre but the coin is otherwise in good Fine condition so my price range would be £40-50.
