Centenionalis of Constantius II
This is the last coin from the group of Roman coins sent in by Bill Wiggins. It’s another billon coin and this one is 17mm in diameter.
Bill’s find is a reduced centenionalis of Constantius II as Caesar under Constantine the Great. On the obverse is a laureate head of Constantius and a legend that reads FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C. On the reverse are two standards, either side of which is a facing soldier holding a spear and a shield. The legend on this side reads GLORIA EXERCITVS. In the exergue are the mint letters for Thessalonica (SMTS).
In volume V of David Sear’s Roman Coins and Their Values coins of this type are listed as number 17690. They were struck from AD 330 to 333.
Valuation
The obverse has been struck off centre but is otherwise in VF condition. The reverse would grade good VF. This is a fairly common coin but it is a nice example of the type so my price range would be £9-12.
