Centenionalis of Constantine the Great

This is another Roman coin from the group that came in from Bill Wiggins. It’s billon (very base silver) and is 19mm in diameter.

The coin is a centenionalis of Constantine the Great. On the obverse is a laureate head of the emperor and a legend reading CONSTANTINVS AVG. On the reverse is a military camp gate with two turrets and a legend reading PROVIDENTIAE AVG. The mint letters in the exergue are for Trier.

In volume IV of David Sear’s Roman Coins and Their Values coins of this type are listed as number 16238. They were struck during AD 324 and 325.

Valuation

The coin is in VF condition but there is some deposit on the reverse. It’s a good example of the type and should be worth around £10 to a collector of Roman coins.
