Calais halfgroat of Henry VI
This coin was found by Liam Reynolds and it is a rather attractive Calais halfgroat of Henry VI.
On the obverse there is an annulet either side of the king’s neck. The inner legend on the reverse reads VIL LA CAL IS, with a double saltire stop after LA and the same after IS. Additionally, there is a single annulet in one of the groups of three pellets within the inner circle.
The really important feature on the reverse is the small trefoil after POSVI. Rather than being a fairly common halfgroat of the annulet coinage, this coin is a mule of an annulet coinage obverse combined with an annulet trefoil reverse. In the Standard Catalogue it is listed as number 1855.
Valuation
The reverse has been struck slightly off centre but the coin is otherwise in VF condition. It’s also quite rare so my price range to a collector would be £180 to £220.
