Penny of Richard II
A valuation on this hammered silver coin was requested by Martin Depear, who wanted a figure to pass a on to a landowner.
Martin’s find is a penny of Richard II. It was issued at York and the quatrefoil in the centre of the reverse tells us it was struck at the archbishop’s mint. The coin belongs to either type I or type II but I can’t say which as the distinguishing marks on the obverse have been rubbed away.
Valuation
Pennies of Richard II are quite scarce but the overall state of preservation of this example leaves much to be desired. I’d grade the coin as being only Fair but a keen collector might still be willing to pay £25 in order to acquire it.
