Penny of Henry III

Kevin Wakeford is the finder of this voided short cross penny, which was unearthed last week. I was asked to provide full details.

In the reverse legend the only part that shows up reads +TOMAS ON. The remainder is weak or flat but near the end of the legend I can make out a letter N. Therefore, the moneyer is Tomas and he mint will be Canterbury. The distinctive shape of the letter A in TOMAS points towards the coin being an example of class 7a of Henry III.

There are flat areas on both sides, which is a pity. However, the head of the king stands out very well indeed and this is definitely a plus point.
