Ancient British silver unit of the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes
Details of the coin pictured here were sent in by Stephen Palmer. However, it was unearthed by one of Stephen’s friends.
The coin is a rather nice Ancient British silver unit of the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes. On the obverse is a bare-headed winged bust with CVNO in front. On the reverse, facing left, is a seated sphinx with TASCIO in front. In Ancient British Coins this type of silver unit is listed as number 2870.
This coin is far more appealing in artistic terms than many other Ancient British silver units. In particular, the bust on the obverse is as good as that seen on many Roman denarii of the same period.
Valuation
The reverse has been struck off centre but the coin is otherwise in VF condition. On the basis of recent auction prices, I’d suggest that this silver unit would be worth around £300.
