Half sovereign of King William IV

Steve Smith has a 50-50 agreement with a landowner so he needed a valuation on this 19th century gold coin.

Steve’s find is a half sovereign of King William IV. It’s dated 1837 on the reverse and its overall condition suggests it did not circulate for long before it was lost.

Despite having very little circulation wear, there are many scuffs and faint scratches on both sides; this is the end result of the coin being tossed about in the soil for not far short of 200 years.

Valuation

I’d grade the coin as good VF and without the defects I’d have priced it at £1,200. However, with all the scuffs and faint scratches a pre-sale auction estimate would be unlikely to be any higher than £700-800.
